The Differences Between a Mid and a High Efficiency Gas Furnace
Mid Efficiency
- 80 % Efficient
- 20 Year Heat Exchanger Warranty
- Requires a chimney liner
- Requires a chimney in good condition.
- Requires combustion air
- Available in Single stage, Two stage, and Two stage with D.C Motor models.
High Efficiency
- 92% + Efficient
- Lifetime Heat Exchanger Warranty
- 2 pipe venting
- Can be vented up chimney, though venting through the wall is most common.
- Sealed combustion
- Available in Single stage, Two stage, and Two stage with D.C Motor models
Thoughts to consider when deciding:
Is your chimney in good condition?
A Mid Efficiency furnace requires a metal chimney liner. If you don't have a chimney, your chimney is in poor condition, or it would be difficult to maneuver a liner down, a high efficiency furnace might be more cost effective than trying to fix the chimney.
Do you plan on residing in your current home for a number of years?
The current payback for gas savings can be approximately $ 80- $ 100 per year, is the payback for a high efficiency furnace worthwhile to you?
Do you think the gas price will fluctuate in the future?
An increase or decrease in the current gas prices will inevitably change the current payback.
Are there any rebates available currently or incentives for purchasing a High Efficiency furnace versus a Mid Efficiency?
If so, this may make your choice a little easier economically.
Check our Grants/Rebate page for current rebate information with savings of up to $350 for upgrading to a high efficiency gas furnace.
